The numbers are staggering: studies by Wendy Wood at the University of Southern California found that approximately forty-three percent of your daily actions happen this way — on autopilot, in the same contexts, with no real decision involved. Make it satisfying (reward). Provide an immediate positive signal after completing the habit. The delayed reward of a long-term goal (fitness, exam results, financial security) is too far in the future to reliably reinforce daily behaviour. Create an immediate reward — a visual mark on a streak calendar, a satisfying checkmark, a ritual of acknowledgment — that delivers a small dopamine signal at the moment of completion. Over time, the satisfaction of the habit itself grows to provide the reward, but in the early days, manufactured immediacy bridges the gap.
